Day 02: Negombo / Pinnawala / Sigiriya
After breakfast we leave for Sigiriya. En route a visit at the Elephant Orphanage at Pinnawala. In the afternoon a tour of Sigiriya; we climb the amazing rock of Sigiriya with its impregnable palace fortress built in the fifth century and enjoy the breath-taking views over the once magnificent royal pool, the throne, remains of the majestic palace, walk ways and the gardens.
Dinner and overnight at the Kassapa Lions Rock Hotel in Sigiriya.
Day 03: Sigiriya / Dambulla / Matale / Kandy
After breakfast we leave for Kandy. En route a visit at the Dambulla Cave Temple. Like Sigiriya, Dambulla is a vast isolated rock, which houses a rock temple (formerly hermit caves). Some of its frescoes are over 2,000years old – and there is a colossal figure of the recumbent Buddha caved out of the rock, some 14 meters long. In the afternoon we visit the city of Kandy; Sri Lanka’s hill capital is, perhaps, its most beautiful town on the island. It is 488 meters above sea level, and next to Colombo, Sri Lanka’s most visited place. The focal point of the town is the golden-roofed Dalada Maligawa Temple, where the sacred tooth relic of the Buddha is enshrined. Kandy is an exciting place for shopping, with souvenirs in wood, copper, silver, brass, ebony, and bronze. Ceramics, lacquer work, handlooms, batiks, jewellery and rush and reed-ware can also be found. In the evening we watch a cultural performance by traditional Kandyan Dancers and drummers.
Dinner and overnight at the colonial style Hotel Suisse in Kandy.
Day 04 Kandy / Peradeniya / Nuwara-Eliya
After breakfast we leave for Nuwara-Eliya. En route a visit at the Peradiniya Botanical Garden, with its amazing variety of trees, plants and flowers as well as a Tea Plantation. In the afternoon a city tour of Nuwara-Eliya. Set in the heart of tea-country, this beautiful town is where the British succeeded in creating an English countryside, with homes in styles from Georgian to Queen Anne. Well-kept lawns with hedges, an Anglican church, and the famous golf course and beautiful parks given the place an air of real nostalgia. Situated 1,890 meters above sea level, the air is cool and fresh – a serene retreat. The perfect backdrop for your honeymoon in Sri Lanka. Acres and acres of tea with its lush green foliage extend miles across the hills.
Dinner and overnight at the Galway Forest Lodge in Nuwara-Eliya.
Day 05: Nuwara-Eliya / Hakgala Botanical Gardens / Divurumpola Temple / Ella
After breakfast we leave for Ella. En route a visit at Hakgala Botanical Gardens. This is the exotic pleasure garden where King Ravana kept the depressed Sita, insisting that she marries him. It was here where the heartwarming meeting took place between her and Hanuman, who brought her Rama’s ring with the news that Rama was looking for her. Thereafter we proceed to Welimada and visit the Divurumpola Temple. Still revered by thousands, this holy haven was the place where Sita performed her Agni Pariksha (proving her chastity) to her husband Rama. Continuing the practice for thousands of years, villagers still pledge their fidelity or take oaths there and even in certain courts, this agreement was binding. This place has been respected and worshipped by people and especially honeymoon couples down the ages. Furthermore it is said that this place was given the name “Divurumpola” or the place of making a wow. Not only in legends but this name has been inscribed in the moonstone guarding the Devale on the premises. In the afternoon we visit Ella. Sri Lanka’s highest village surrounded by hills perfect for walks through tea plantations to temples and waterfalls. Additionally it boasts three locations linked to the Ramayana where local legend claims Ravana was hiding Sita. First there is the Ravana Ella Cave, located at the massive Ella Falls; King Ravana is said to have lived in one of the caves above the waterfall and a nearby pool bored out of the rock by the gushing waters is where Sita is said to have bathed Ravana. Another highly romantic site for your honeymoon.
Dinner and overnight at the Galway Forest Lodge in Nuwara-Eliya.
Day 06 Nuwara-Eliya / Kitulagala / Negombo
After breakfast we leave for Negombo via Kitulgala (optional). Close to Nuwara Eliya is Horton Plains, Sri Lanka’s highest and most isolated plateau. Nature lovers will revel in this wide, patna-grass covered plain, the haunt of many wild, yet harmless, animals and the home of many species of birds. Bridle paths will take you to the precipice known as World’s End – a sheer drop of 1,050 meters.
Dinner and overnight at Villa Araliya.
